The gulf of Souda is the largest natural port of the Mediterranean. It is located on the north coast of the Chania prefecture and is shaped by the main coastline of the island and the cape of "Meleha" or "Cape". Its geographical location, its direction and aspect along with its size make the gulf of Souda a safe port during the whole year. Its geographical location on the center of the east Mediterranean, over the ancient sea routes, assigns a special strategic importance to the port, making it a spot of great interest from antiquity until today. In the gulf of Souda, numerous complex defense systems have been developed through time, reaffirming the intense interest to guard and defend this port.
